1999; video; 30 minutes
Producer/Director: Debbie McGee, CAMS
A documentary on a theatrical production based on the Grade 5 social
studies curriculum, written and performed by Grade 5 students with the
aid of community artists.
Awards: Award of Merit, Association for Media and Technology in Education in Canada (AMTEC) 2000.
This project was done for Dr. Clar Doyle, an Education professor at MUN. The play was an ArtsSmart project, an initiative of the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council and the McConnell Foundation that funded artists to work on curriculum-based projects in Newfoundland schools. Clar Doyle helped the students write the play, Patricia Andrews helped the students perform the play, Fergus O’Byrne helped them write the songs, and the final video was used by the Arts Council to promote the ArtsSmart program. Plus, I learned about the Confederation debates.
