Building Community Capacity

2007; video; 27 minutes

This video documents a three-year Community Capacity Building project in Chalker Place, a low-income neighbourhood in St. John’s. Through interviews with residents, the project facilitator, and key service providers, we learn how community supports for parents makes a safer community for children.

Producer/Director: Debbie McGee, DELT

Awards: Award of Merit, Association for Media and Technology in Education in Canada (AMTEC) 2007.

This project came through Dr. Ken Barter, a professor in the School of Social Work at Memorial University. The actual work in the community was close to finished by the time the video was made, so I had to rely on interviews to get a sense of what had happened over the three years of the project. I worked closely with Karen Gray, the community facilitator and I always called the project Chalker Place, so the rather academic title of the final video is always a surprise to me.
